Personal letters, business correspondence, diaries, financial material, literary manuscripts and typescripts, poetry, leases and other legal documents, and printed ephemerea documenting the lives and experiences of members of the McKnight, Davis and Wilson families of Allegheny, Osborne and Sewickley, Pennsylvania, from 1831 to 1974. The collection also includes minutes, reports, and other archival records of the Protestant Orpahn Asylum of Pittsburgh and Woman's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church of Sewickley, Pa. The bulk of the collection concerns Eliza Cochran Wilson McKnight (1860-1926) and describes her marriage with Charles McKnight, relations with her five children, friendship with Philadelphia missionary worker Rachel Lowrie, and attempts to reconcile the demands of family life with her personal intellectual and literary ambitions. Notable items include financial papers of Judge Hugh Davis; letters and other personal papers of his son, Robert Hudman Davis, and his wife, Eliza Cochran Davis; diaries and letters of their daughter, Daisy Davis Wilson, and her husband, Presbyterian minister and educator, Samuel Jennings Wilson; personal and business correspondence of Charles McKnight, a Pittsburgh banker and industrialist; correspondence, diaries, writings, and personal financial papers of his wife, Eliza Cochran Wilson McKnight; and diaries and letters of their daughter. Principal subjects in the collection include the banking and steel industries in Pittsburgh and Sewickley, Pa., charitable and philanthropic activities and women's clubs, orphans and orphanages, descriptions of secondary and undergraduate student life, Sunday School education, women's missionary work in China and India and the experiences of soldiers during World War I.
